Searching for a local school for your early learner? It can be a daunting task, especially with so many excellent options in the DC area. Today, we’re highlighting one of the area’s top-rated preschools, The Winchester School in Silver Spring

Winchester School: Fostering a Love of Learning

Founded in 1970, The Winchester School has been a local staple for almost 50 years. It is wholly dedicated to early childhood education – it’s the school’s core purpose.

Teachers lay the foundation for a lifelong love of learning by providing a safe and loving environment, a natural extension of life at home.

Daily life at school focuses on development in five key areas:

1. Intellectual Development

Of course, academics are key, with instruction in language arts, math, science, Spanish, art, music, and physical education. Academic subjects are presented in an age-appropriate manner, challenging the children to learn more while providing the love and encouragement they need to keep going.

Each subject has a “learning center” in the classroom, with its own teacher and learning material, so children are able to become immersed in the subject and learn from a professional with true expertise in the area.

2. Social Development

Many parents start thinking about preschool when they want their children to have more social experiences. This is a key piece of life at Winchester, where the warm environment fosters new friendships and social experiences.

Children also learn to respect the differences between themselves and others thanks to the diverse student body.

3. Emotional Development

Teachers at Winchester recognize the emotional climate of a school must be right to encourage learning and development. So, they work hard to set the proper emotional tone in the school, teaching children how to respond in an emotionally healthy and positive way by example.

4. Physical Development

Of course, physical activity is a hugely important piece of creating a healthy mind and body. Winchester provides this through both free play and organized physical education. This is an integral piece of each school day.

5. Spiritual, Moral and Ethical Development

Winchester is not a religious school, but the teachers and administrators strongly believe the importance of teaching spiritual, moral and ethical lessons, both by example and through teaching.

Our world’s great religions and cultures share many moral and ethical principles (like honesty, compassion, generosity, etc.), and the school teaches these to children in an unbiased fashion. This not only serves to create a positive school community, but also prepares children for roles in their greater communities, as well.
