With so many amazing children’s books out there, it can be challenging to select which books will capture both you and your little one without taking home half of the library! After many years of reading books to young children, I compiled a list sure to surprise, entertain, introduce new ideas, induce giggles, and inspire you and your little one.

Here are 10 favorite children’s books picked by a teacher-mommy:

1) Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses by James Dean

Pete the Cat has become a well-known and well-loved character in the young reader’s world due to his positive outlook on life, who lets us know whatever happens, “It’s all good”. In Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses, Pete shares his magic sunglasses with friends to help to see their bad days in a new way. Maybe Pete will help inspire you and your little one to always see something positive in every situation too!

2) Ada Twist, Scientist by Andrea Beaty

Ada Twist, Scientist embodies the natural curiosity of all little learners with her powerful question, “Why?” She not only empowers young scientists to discover the world around them, she reminds parents to support their children’s big thinking, even if it drives them a little crazy.

3) If I Built A Car by Chris Van Dusen

When a kid’s imagination goes wild designing the ultimate dream car, we realize we all want a car with a swimming pool, snack bar, driving robot, and ability to fly too! In If I Built a Car, little ones will enjoy reading about all the amazing inventions packed into one the car while adults will be left wishing their car had some of these upgrades.

4) Wolf’s Coming by Joe Kulka

Run, hide! Don’t make a sound! Wolf’s Coming is the perfect amount of drama and suspense for little ones who will be ready to hide themselves before the twist of a surprise ending (that they’ll never see coming)! Be sure to check this one out!

5) Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein

Parents will love relating to this little chicken’s need to interrupt throughout the story. Kids will love the funny, new endings the little chicken designs for classic stories! Interrupting Chicken helps inspire your little one to create their own new endings to well-loved stories too!

6) Old MacDonald Had A Truck by Steve Goetz

If your little one loves the original tune, then they will love singing along to a new version full of heavy machinery! In Old MacDonald Had A Truck, the illustrations give clues about what these machines could build on Old MacDonald’s farm. Enjoy and sing-along together!

7) The Book With No Pictures by B.J. Novak

Just because this is The Book With No Pictures doesn’t mean there isn’t any fun! Check out this silly, laugh-out-loud book that will have your little one giggling as they ask for more. A great introduction to books without pictures. And you will find that you and your kids will be cracking up together!

8) How Are You Peeling? by Saxton Freymann and Joost Elfers

How Are You Peeling? will have you talking about feelings and emotions with real images of delicious fruits and veggies. It’s a great way to discuss how children can name their emotions or manage their feelings in different situations. This is such a good read for kids!

9) True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka

After reading the classic fairytale everyone’s pretty sure the pigs were fleeing for their lives that day. However, after reading the True Story of the Three Little Pigs book, you’ll find out what really happened that day as told by the wolf. You’ll have much more sympathy for that “big, bad” wolf who just needed a cup of sugar and your little one will be amazed to see a totally different side to a well-known story.

10) Spork by Kyo Maclear

Who knew that a utensil could be so inspiring? Spork by Kyo Maclear is a fantastic way to discuss some big topics such as not fitting in, finding your purpose in the world, developing self-confidence, and having empathy for others who may feel this way. You’ll never look at this utensil the same way again!

Enjoy spending time snuggling up and reading with your little one as you make new memories together! Are there any children’s books you and your kids love to read? Let me know!
