Recently my son and I had the opportunity to check out the “First Musical” class at Levine Music. He LOVED every minute of this class. The “First Musical” class is designed for 3-to-6-year olds to experience the three main aspects of being in a musical theater production: dancing, singing, and acting.

First Step: Dancing

The class began with a quick warm-up dancing around the room with silly poses. Then the teacher led a simple choreographed dance. Each child was smiling and giggling as they moved along. Their happy faces revealed how confident they felt as they remembered each dance step.

Then Comes Singing

After moving around for 15 minutes, the children rested their bodies and warmed up their voices. Some of the singing games they played included matching pitches, using solfege syllables, and experimenting with different sounds their voice can make. I think my son’s favorite part was using the whiteboard to draw the notes they were singing. (He was so proud of his half note!)

And Finally Acting

At the end of the class, the kids moved around some more as they acted out simple scenarios. The teacher asked the children to act like animals and pushed the exercise further by asking how the animal was feeling. Sleepy tigers, cranky elephants, and sneaky birds appeared right before my eyes. It was heartwarming to see the children light up when their ideas were used in the scenario!

As a mom with a dancing and singing background, I was happy to introduce the exciting world of musical theater to my son with this class. The teacher was super fun and nurturing. She captivated the attention of all of the children made this class fantastic. We can’t wait to go back again soon!
